Assist the IEA in developing historical time series for energy statistics and energy balances of India

Energy statistics for India were historically reported using fiscal years, which limited international comparability, particularly for external trade and long-term energy balance analysis. To address this, there was a need to develop consistent calendar-year energy statistics and balances.

Artemis supported the International Energy Agency by reconstructing historical calendar-year energy balances for India. This involved data mapping, identification of reliable sources, review of assumptions and development of estimation methods to reconstruct energy balances for the period from 1970 to 2010.

The project resulted in the production of comparable calendar-year energy balances for India, covering historical periods previously reported only in fiscal years. This significantly improved international comparability of India’s energy statistics. The work was completed over two phases with 39 expert work-days and 42 expert work-days, respectively.
