Eurostat

Sector : Trade & Economic Analysis

Geographical area : Non-EU countries

Service : Data Science

Year : 2018-2024

The challenge

The COMEXT database requires detailed and reliable external trade statistics from non-EU countries and international organisations to support EU policy analysis. However, data originating from multiple providers showed heterogeneity in formats, coverage and quality, creating challenges for consistency, validation and integration into Eurostat’s statistical systems.

The solution

Artemis supported the collection and processing of detailed trade data from non-EU countries and international organisations. The work involved validating, correcting, aggregating and transforming data in close cooperation with data providers. Validated datasets were then integrated into the COMEXT database to ensure consistency and usability.

The outcome

The project ensured the continuous availability of high-quality, harmonised external trade data for EU institutions. Validated and integrated datasets supported analytical and policy needs of several Directorates-General, including DG TRADE, DG AGRI, DG REGIO and DG MARE. Artemis delivered 970 expert work-days, reinforcing the reliability and usability of the COMEXT database for external trade analysis.
